October Thoughts – Villanelle

Summer Time ends 25 October 2015

Kitchen clock Lower Brockhampton House Forget the past, brew up the cup that cheers.
The spirit of the staircase, there’s the bind.
The clocks tell lies about advancing years.

Those teenage passions, harmonies once sung;
It’s only now with hindsight you were kind –
Forget the past, brew up the cup that cheers.

Did honeyed loving words once leave your tongue?
You’ve put all that behind you, love was blind.
The clocks tell lies about advancing years.

Both of you were heroes, both unsung.
No triumphs now, you’re old, your face is lined;
Forget the past, brew up the cup that cheers.

Remembering is biased, life’s unstrung.
Who really minds if you forgot to wind
The clocks. Tell lies about advancing years.

They say that youth is wasted on the young,
But too late now. It’s time that you, resigned,
Forget the past, brew up the cup that cheers;
The clocks tell lies about advancing years.
